I’ve had a busy few weeks, becoming a resident of Germany and moving out of my Philly apartment, so this reading list is severely delayed. I haven’t even had a moment to start a new book for April, but here are my reads and quick thoughts on each book from the first quarter of 2025.
January
The Housemaid

Freida McFadden
8/10
Mystery / Thriller
Quick Review: I wasn’t reading as much at the end of 2024, so I needed something to bring back into the fun of reading. I’m glad I started the year with this one! I was hooked from page 1. You’re taken on a wild ride with this fast-paced thriller, and I found it hard to put the book down.
Will I continue with the series? Maybe

Truly Devious

5/10
Mystery
Quick Review: I thought this story had a strong start, but then it was just boring until the last chapter, which had an interesting twist. Unfortunately, I don’t feel compelled to read the next book even to find out what happens next.

Beloved

Toni Morrison
8/10
Literary Classic / Magical Realism
Quick Review: This is a dark and emotional read, so I highly recommend being in a decent mental state before reading this, but I’m glad I finally got around to it. Toni Morrison’s writing is gritty and vivid with complicated characters, but I can appreciate a classic for these reasons.
Will I continue with the series (Jazz and Paradise)? Yes, but I’m in no rush.
Is this a reread? Yes, but I’m in no rush.
A Court of Wings and Ruin

Sarah J. Maas
7/10
Fantasy/Romance
Quick Review: A great escape, honestly. This is the third book in the ACOTAR series and although quite adventurous, I KIND OF wish there was a bit more Feyre, Rhysand, Tamlin drama. I did like that the battle at the end read like a movie. Another thought is that it felt like end of the series even though I know there are two more books. Maybe Maas wasn’t sure if she’d keep going?

Good Dirt

Charmaine Wilkerson
7/10
Historical Fiction
Quick Review: I’m a sucker for a good black generational story. I also really enjoyed Black Cake from the same author. This story was great, but I found certain parts compelling and the in-between to move a little slow for me. I found myself bored at some points. This story was emotional, and I did cry a few times, though.
